@ Sticks & Stones Farm, Newtown, CT
“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” — Albert Camus
In the early parts of this beautiful season, we’ll explore the river’s edge; observing crawfish, minnows, snakes, frogs and any water friends we can find. We’ll gather plants to make a kid friendly herbal elixir or remedy. As the weather cools down, we’ll focus on fire building, carving and coal burning, making clay coil bowls, and grilling up some treats.
These are just a few of the things we’ll be exploring with the kids this season. As always, we’ll be hiking, singing, playing forest games, offering age appropriate craft options, foraging for tea, learning about the plants and animals we encounter and improvising the focus of the class based on the children’s passions.
We are here to cultivate the potential kids have to express and develop their ability to feel safe, confident and effective in the forest, as a group and as individuals.

Info & Packing List
- Check the weather before you come. We will have class rain or shine so stay informed so you have what you need.
- If we need to cancel class due to weather (thunderstorms, high winds, etc.) You will receive a text at least 2 hours before class starts.
- Please Park in the larger lot to the right. We will meet in front of the Stone Barn.
- There is a Porta-Potty for our use in the field right next to the parking lot. Once we hike up the hill, be prepared to go in the woods.
- If you will be late or unable to attend any class, please text your instructor to let them know so we won’t be worried or waiting for you. If you’re going to be very late, we will describe to you where we are or send someone to meet you.
- The fastest way to get ahold of Rainbow is by phone/text at (203) 494-7363. If you have any questions as you prepare for the first day, please feel free to ask.
- Sticks and Stones is a very welcoming place! You can picnic before or after class time or go for additional walks on the property any day. We just request that you clean up well after yourselves and your kids.

What to Bring
- Lunch and Snacks! (Your kids may eat even more than usual in this active outdoor environment)
- A Full Water Bottle.
- A dry change of clothes, including socks and water shoes. Your kid may only be planning on putting their feet in and then fall and get completely wet. Be prepared for that!
- A backpack to put these things in. Having a comfortable pack is essential to enjoying your day. If you carry everything in a tote on one shoulder, it can be uncomfortable and distract you from being in the moment. If your child is over 5, they can have a small backpack and carry some of their own stuff.
- If the weather looks wet, cold or windy, make sure to bring extra layers, wool socks, waterproof gloves and boots for both you and your child.
- Wipes.
